A brief history of crystals and how you might like to use them during your Meno journey

“Everything Is Energy and That’s All There Is to It. Match the Frequency of the Reality You Want”.

Channeler, Darryl Anka, from an entity named Bashar.

Crystals have excited the imagination and desire since the dawn of time and regardless of who you are, everyone in the world has a relationship with a crystal in one way or another. Perhaps you didn’t realize that you are interacting with crystals through medicine, technology (your phone!) and even your food. Did you know that the chemical elements found in stones and crystals also make up the human body and we need them to physically function. You may wear a crystal every day in a ring, or a type of jewelry. You may have acquired a crystal as an inheritance or as gift. Maybe you use crystals as part of your daily spiritual practice. You could simply have collected crystals over the years because they are beautiful and full of wonder.  However, you interact with crystals, and even if you are not ready to open your mind to their more thrilling qualities, crystals’ energetic vibrations and powers have guided, aided, and haunted humans through the ages.

Crystals are minerals that have grown from a tiny nucleus within a solution into a crystal. Crystals can simply be defined as, a naturally occurring inorganic (nonliving) solid which take on a uniform shape within a specific structure, forming a crystal lattice that extends in all directions. Their physical and chemical properties are defined by the elements that make up each individual crystal type and by the environment in which they are formed. Crystals are usually formed from fluid, heat, and pressure, many grow from water rich in dissolved minerals, they can grow from melted rock and even vapor. Under the influence of different temperatures and pressures, atoms combine in an amazing array of geometric crystal shapes.

The philosophy of modern crystal healing draws its concepts from traditional Asian cultures, think of the Chinese concept of Chi, the life energy and the Hindu or Buddhist concept of chakras, which are all points of life-energy, said to connect the physical and supernatural elements of the body. However, in all beliefs around crystal healing, it is the energy that is important. Our whole universe is flowing energy, that comes together in millions of different ways, and it all started from stellar reactions or cosmic energy events. You know how they say ‘we are all made of stars’ well what they actually mean is we are all universally connected through the same energy that created our whole universe. We are all descendants of stellar ashes, left behind by stars that had long died when our Solar System formed, and it means that there’s an ancient, indirect, and delicate communication between crystals and humans. We speak the same language at the chemical level, so we can channel and connect to that energetic vibrational core at any time, in any place.

In most cultures since the dawn of time there have been people who use crystals and gemstones to heal and shift energy. It is little wonder then, that these stones have for generations been considered power bearers of rich symbolic significance, said to embody a great sprit and energy. The oldest legends of crystal magic date back to the mythical ancient continent of Atlantis whose people purportedly used crystals for telepathic communication.

Numerous of the popular crystals that we know and love today originated from Africa, so it is not surprising that in African cultures dating back 100,000 years, crystals and precious minerals were mined, crafted, and used with spiritual intention, for example Citrine found in the Congo is considered the most powerful and sacred crystal of them all, because it is said to contain solidified sunlight acting as a source of happiness, curiosity, abundance, confidence, and health.

In Australia the Aboriginal people for some 75,000 years have had the important and traditional role of Karadji (Aboriginal Clever Men [sometimes women]), who can be described as a source of spiritual security among other tribal members, with a presence distinctively different to others and capable of performing feats of magic and healing, they can see vast distances and into other realms, and through a scared initiation using ‘wild stones’ they possess the ability to bridge the gap between what is manifested in the physical world to the spirit-world of the Dreaming. Wild stones or Quartz Crystals are especially important as this is what Baiami’s (creator spirit of the Dreaming) throne is said to be made from. Quartz crystals are believed to have fallen to earth from heaven as “solidified light”.

The ancientSumerians from Mesopotamia some 8000 years ago were known to make cylinder seals from gypsum and hematite, so that inscriptions, images, and messages could be applied in cuneiform (logo-syllabic script), because of the crystal’s protective properties they had used them in sacred temples during spiritual ceremonies. They also used crystals for inlays in their finest artwork, with Lapis Lazuli and Serpentine amongst their most prized.

The Chinese have used crystals in medicine for some 5000 years. Ancient medical texts describe the use of acupuncture needles made from crystals. In China, while many crystals are used for various properties, the most prized stone is Jade. Confucius was so fascinated with jade, it now manifests as the stone for virtue, kindness, wisdom, justice, civility, music, sincerity, truth, Heaven, and Earth. Jade is so valued by the Chinese culture that it has written characters in the language. In an ancient Tibetan Buddhist scripture, there is a mantra “Om mani padme hum” which literally translates to “gemstones in lotus”, demonstrating the use of gems in meditation. There have been discoveries of ancient Chinese emperors buried in jade armour, alongside jade horses. The Chinese to this day believe jade to possess the power to avert evil and bad luck and to foster moral integrity and purity, health, and good fortune.

The Native Americans have known crystals as powerful tools given by the Earth for generations. There is a great respect for the Earth and all beings on it, in most Native American religions. Due to the power that crystals possess, they are cautioned to be used carefully, respectfully, and only by those who were trained in their use. The American Indians of the Cherokee and Apache tribes passed on the teachings of crystal healing though word of mouth, in a tradition known as didactic, however as a result many of these teachings have been lost. To the Native Americans the most important aspects of crystal use are meditation and to meditate on good thoughts and with a positive mindset.  The other is respect. Respect for crystals, reflecting the great respect for the earth. The most prominent crystals in this culture are Turquoise, or the stone of the sky. Believed to be created from rainwater mixed with tears of joy that embedded into the Earth. Many tribes used Turquoise in all types of ceremonies and rituals, to bring rain, for protection, and currency. The Hopi tribe specifically used turquoise to enhance spiritual communication and to promote healing. The Navajo tribe used black onyx to protect against negative energies.

Crystal healing In India has always been treasured. Vedic holy text The Garuda Purana aims to teach the way of life and the ideas of dharma (a cosmic law underlying right behaviour and social order). It is a reminder that the living body is a microcosm of the universe, governed by the same laws and made out of the same substances. The Graha-gocara Jyautisha, another Vedic holy text, has instructions for the use of crystals to attract good fortune and how to provide a positive effect on the person. The earliest written record of chakras comes from the Vedas, which are ancient Indian texts central to the scripture of Hinduism. The Vedic demon Vala is significant in the origin story of ayurvedic crystal healing practices, when the Demigods trick him and dismember his body parts, they become seeds or gems resting into the rivers, oceans, forests, and mountains. Each part of his body contains talismanic properties, that are made more important by purity of the gem, for example the Ruby is Vala’s blood spilled upon the earth, this blood is said to have dropped into pools of water to form the sacred Ganges River. The ruby therefore relates to blood circulation and is believed to bring out one’s courageousness and sensuality, while removing sadness. The moon stone, believed to have been embedded in the forehead of Ganesh, is used to gift prophecy to the wearer, as well as clear the mind to make way for wisdom.

The most well documented of all crystal users are the Ancient Egyptians.  They must have been and amazing civilization to see, as their people, women, men, children, of all levels of society, would adorn themselves with all manner of crystals, set in gold. They prized Lapis Lazuli more than gold itself. The crystals were mostly worn in jewellery, with strict processes in their production to enhance and preserve the supernatural properties of certain colours, shapes, and materials. They used Galena (lead ore)after it was ground for the eyeshadow known as kohl.  Garnet was used to promote good health and for protection. The heart scarabs were made from Lapis Lazuli, which were placed on the heart of the deceased in burial to protect the heart in death, while Malachite was used to help pharaohs inner visions and to rule with wisdom by being attached to their headdresses. Carnelian was worn to purify the blood and relieve pain and as you will read in my journal about chromotherapy, the Egyptians also placed crystals in walls, so that light could shine through and heal those who were sick with the penetration of the crystal colour and vibration directly on to the skin. Although wearing crystals while living was sacred, it was equally as important to have carved grave amulets of the same gems in death, so they were adorned in burials, as in life.

How we describe crystals today is derived from the Ancient Greek word κρύσταλλος (Krustallos), which means both “ice” and “crystal”. The Ancient Greeks believed that pure clear quartz crystals were perpetual ice poured down from the sky and that it had frozen so deeply that it would always remain solid. Amethyst is still used today as a means for sobriety and to prevent hangovers, its name translates from an ancient Greek word, ᾰ̓μέθῠστος (Amethustos) meaning “not drunken” and is related to the story of Goddess Diana and Dionysus god of wine, her often drunk companion! Hematite comes from the Greek word for blood, αίθω, because of the red colouration produced when it oxidises. It was used by the Greek god of war, Aries, and soldiers, by rubbing it over themselves before battles to become invincible. Sapphires, whose name comes from the Greek word σάπφειρος (Sapphirus) meaning blue, were worn by kings and priests alike for their association with purity and wisdom.

As Christianity made its way across Europe in the middle ages it discouraged some old spiritual ideas, however you can find healing gemstones in all religions. They are mentioned throughout the Bible, “Carbuncle” for example is the name for all red gems in the Bible. The best example of crystals in Christianity is the breastplate of Aaron, or the “High Priest’s Breastplate”, as mentioned in the book of Exodus. It is a sacred object worn in order to communicate with God, said to have twelve different stones, “one for each of the names of the sons of Israel”. A roman scholar when compiling his list of the stones on this plate, from his findings created the first list of “birthstones” as we know them today. Before the 17th century, people wore the stone of each month during that month, rather than wearing their personal birthstone all year. Even in the Koran, the 4th Heaven is said to be comprised of garnet (carbuncle).

So, what does all this history have to do with crystals, and Meno I hear you ask?

The first thing I want to highlight is that crystals have always been with us, literally since the dawn of time and long before medicine as we know it today held social, economic, and ideological dominance over modern society. One of the oldest known crystals on earth, was found in the Australian outback in a place called Jack Hills, WA. Jack hills is important as it is the most ancient fragment of Earth’s crust known to scientists and within it, they found a zircon that has a carbon fingerprint of approximately 4.4 billion years, so quite literally around the time earth was born from a stellar reaction or cosmic energy event. I personally think this is super cool!

The second thing is that while there has been a very ‘hippy’, ‘new age’, or as others put it ‘woo woo’,  view of crystals held in recent culture, the fact is our ancient descendants took a holistic, personal, and spiritual approach to health and well-being and understood personal responsibility, that every action has a reaction and that for every crystal there is an infinite energetic force that can be tapped into and assist in all aspects of life.

The third thing I want to raise is how our energy as humans is very unstable. We live with an unstable vibrational frequency that is easily influenced. Think about how easily you can change based on an interaction with someone in your day, the ever-present social media pressure, the news cycle, and world events, even traffic and the weather can be discombobulating. Our minds are full of memories and our days full of experiences good and bad that move our energy in a second. By contrast crystals have a strong stable energy vibrational frequency that is hard to change. They are a fixed, constant, and solid. They are the Yang to our Yin, so to speak.

In summary I believe in the healing abilities of crystals and stones, and I have used them personally for a large portion of my life and even more so as I navigate Meno, to bring in positive energy vibrations for my mental, spiritual, and emotional health and to help me unblock energies that have become stuck. For me crystals are an essential part of feeling Positively Charged.

As I have said on many occasions throughout my journals the thing with Meno is that it takes a combination of movement, mindset, and modification practices to get you on the right track, my crystal practice is simply a tool in my tool kit of mindset that works for me, so I invite you to consider the following three things when it comes to crystals:

  1. What crystals do you already have in your environment. Are they something that you personally brought into your life, or did they find you in other ways. Are they something that you have a natural connection with and if so why, or why not?

Meno is a time of reflection and rejuvenation. It is a time to connect deeply with yourself and reflect on your journey to this moment in time and where you want to go next. It is a time to focus on the things that bring you positive vibrations and frequencies and a time to let go of energies that no longer make you feel good.

Now that you have an awareness of the journey that the crystals have taken to come to you, you can begin to explore ways to engage with and honour their energy and how that energy can help you to keep bouncing forward, flow in harmony and enhance positive energies and vibrations in your life, as you move through Meno.

  2. If you are interested in crystals and their energy start small. Historically, crystals have been a large influencer of healing and while cultural practices differ, much of the purposes are the same. Start by thinking about what energy you want to have more of, or if you feel like there is energy that needs to be cleared, what is it.

Start with your intention and pick the crystal that your intuition guides you to, the one you have a strong feeling from or simply the one that is most visually appealing. Your own body and intuition know what it needs, so you will be amazed, once you put it out there, what comes your way. Ensure that you respect how the crystal comes to you, the universe has sent it to you, because the crystal has something to share, be open to the crystal’s wisdom, allowing it to guide your energetic transformation, however that looks.

As you start to gather your crystal collection, either in Jewelry, physical rocks, or objects made from them, be aware of where they have come from and that their energy is now in your orbit. It is good to do a simple cleanse, to show care, recognition and respect for the energetic vibrational exchange that is about to take place. Simply placing them in sunlight or moonlight will give them an extra spark of energy to share with you.

Once you have them and are ready to use them, it is really up to you how you engage. You may be wearing them all the time, you could hold them in your hand, display them, meditate with them, keep them in your car, handbag, or pocket. You may have them on your desk at work, use them in therapy sessions, or explore building grids, if that is your thing. It is all about an exchange of appreciation, joy and above all energy.

  3. If you are not sure where to start, start with someone who knows!

Like all things Meno, crystals are simply another thing you can add to your tool kit to help guide you during this time. Healing both spiritually and with crystals, is not a new concept, it has been repeated literally throughout all human existence on earth and there are people who use and exercise these ancient healing practices today.

I have personally spent some time with Jacqui Crafter, aka Aliki Rise. Jacqui is well versed in the energy of life and crystals and has helped to broaden my understanding not only of crystals, but of breath and meditation. Jacqui is trained in Reiki (‘ray-key’), which is a Japanese form of therapy used to increase energy levels and promote relaxation and wellbeing.

You could start a little more casually by dropping into a crystal shop near you. Some of my regular visits are to the Merakiii Room on Hutt Street, or to Eternal Spirit on Unley Road. I especially love going to the Adelaide Gem and Mineral Clubs shows and sales or the Annual Gem and Mineral Show. I love talking to the people who have actually found the crystal that is finding me, I love knowing where it was found, what the weather was like that day and how they knew to dig just there. The knowledge at these events is endless.

I am manifesting a vision of attending the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show®, which is the largest, oldest, and most prestigious gem and mineral show in the world and that some 65K people from around the world visit annually.

Weather you are already practicing with crystals and energy, or if your journey is only just beginning, remember that this is your journey, and you know how and when to start. Also keep in mind that spiritual methods of healing predate medicine as we know it today by thousands of years, so as you engage with these practices you engage with all the wisdom that these practices hold. Enjoy!

I will be sharing a crystal of the month on socials with suggestions of how to use that particular energy to assist you with your Meno symptoms. Be sure to connect so you can start to explore and navigate the wonderful world of crystal energy.
