Mimi Moon Meno = Positive Purpose

Mimi Moon Meno is about making a positive impact through, Movement, Mindset and Modification, for Generation X Women and beyond as we move through Peri-Meno and Meno.

My profession has been in the social housing sector for the last 18+ years and so I am acutely aware of the fact that Generation X women are the fasted growing homeless cohort in Australia, with some 400,000 of us over the age of 45 at risk of homelessness and this is growing by around 30% every 5 years.

Gen X women are those of us born between the mid-1960s to early 1980s. We are roughly 10% of the Australian population and we all share experiences and life transitions that are unique to being female and which can impact our movement, mental health, wellbeing, and future security; menopause (or Meno, as I am now referring to it) being one of them.

Currently in Australia mental health disorders represent the leading cause of disability for women, some 43% of us will experience mental illness at some time

of us are unhappy with our body and we have very high rates of eating disorders (the deadliest of all mental illnesses today).

Women and Girls in socioeconomically disadvantaged and marginalised groups continue to experience poorer health outcomes than the general population.

In Australia women living with dementia are overrepresented in comparison to men and as we continue to age, we are at increased risk of experiencing loneliness and social isolation, which is linked to depression, dementia, and premature mortality.

There is growing evidence that domestic violence increases during the Peri-Meno and Meno change.

Suicide and breast cancer are the leading causes of death for us up to the age of 45. We have very high rates of musculoskeletal conditions, osteoporosis, back pain problems and pelvic floor disorders, amongst other things.

Once in Peri Meno and Meno 20% of us will experience significant mental ill health

Meno increases our risk of future heart health issues and currently in Australia almost every hour of every day an Australian woman dies of heart disease.

With my background in the social housing sector and now my personal experience of Peri-Meno I have started to join some dots between the growing homeless cohort of generation X women and Meno. I believe there is a real and clear link, where a few changes in circumstances (relationship, employment, and health status) because of Meno, are having an unfavourable impact on us and this is contributing to homelessness amongst us. Knowing what I know about my experience, it has made me question how a woman who is homeless, under employed, living with a disability, or in an unstable situation is managing the change, and funding the supports required. Mimi Moon Meno is calling for more and better research on this topic and most certainly better funding and education about Meno to ensure that women stay housed, employed, and supported.

As such Mimi Moon Meno will power forward through profits generated. 10% of all profits will go towards creating housing, improving services, and education for women, in particular generation X women, as we change and age. I want to ensure that as we get moving, retune our mindset and understand what needs to be modified in our lives, to stay positive, connected, and active, that we CHARGE forward the positive power, through stable and supportive co-living housing for older women, improved services such as a ‘Meno Mentors’ and better access to MHT, and education about Meno and how to flourish through the Meno change in all aspects of our lives.

This is non-negotiable and here is why……………

Women are leaders, tradition-breakers, lovers, role models, mothers, caretakers, wave-makers, daughters, sisters, nieces, students, cousins, aunties, grandmas, wives, trend-setters, entrepreneurs, colleagues, friends, world-shakers, and much, much more. It is important that we are Positively CHARGED and living supported, informed, happy, connected, and active lives!
