In this section I want to bring you stories from around the globe and Australia that promote positive Menopause changes, healthy aging, and women’s aging advocates and or any outstanding demonstrations of women gently giving the middle finger to society norms.
You gotta swing your hips now! Come on baby, jump up, jump back!……..Do the loc, do the loc, do the loco locomotion with me! Congratulations Kylie, on your nomination to receive the Global Icon award at the Brit Awards, coming up on March 2nd. I have loved Kylie since I was a little girl and have vivid memories of dancing to her music in the rumpus room. The reason for the pop icon’s success might be simpler than people realise and that is she is the same Kylie she has always been, and I think that is great. I mean look at how amazing she looks in the Padam Padam video clip. I can’t say that I am personally a fan of this new track or album, but I am a fan of a middle-aged woman dressed in all red and looking smoking hot! Well done, Kylie, you absolutely deserve this award. It is a fabulous recognition of all you have done and all the people you have inspired, like Taylor Swift, who won the same award in 2021.
Two years ago the Menopause Experts Group founder and CEO, Dee Murry was the first to report from MEGs own independent research on the fact that menopause was increasingly at the center of numerous UK employment tribunals for unfair dismissal and discrimination, you can see the story here and then just this week it has come up again through the BBC, that firms must help menopausal workers, or face being sued, see the story here. What I think is very interesting is that in the UK they are looking at Menopause as a disability. I mean it is not a disability. It is certainly debilitating at times, but it is not a disability. We need to think about how we frame the natural change of Menopause and I think that building understanding and providing flexibility and support within the workplace is a great step in the right direction.
Someone who has been a passionate campaigner and activist for menopause is Kate Muir, said on the subject that women need to be supported so they can work, be powerful and go through this stage and be happy. Kate Muir is a Scottish writer and documentary maker and in 2022 released the book, Everything You Need to Know About the Menopause (But Were Too Afraid to Ask). She worked with another passionate activist Davina McCall, to produce the documentary, Sex, Myths, and the Menopause for Channel 4 current affairs. She doesn’t stop with menopause, Kate has just released Everything You Need to Know About the Pill (But Were Too Afraid to Ask), off the back of her documentary, Pill Revolution.
As Davina McCall Says, ‘You are a badass bitch. We are ALL badass bitches. Fuck you, menopause! We are not going quietly’. Yes, Davina I absolutely agree!
